Summary

Aerial photography in 1996 recorded cropmarks that have been identified as a large hengiform monument and a number of ring ditches. The size of the ring ditches suggest they are early barrows, maybe part of a barrow cemetery, with the henge forming the central focus. Other anomalous mounds have been noted here.

Map

2 July 1996. NLA aerial photography.
Exceptional cropmarks showing a large hengiform monument and four ring ditches.
The possible henge has an entrance to the northeast and appears to be defined by two closely set ditches around the entrance. These then appear to merge into one, forming a broader ditch around the remainder of the monument. It is not clear whether this is a structural difference or a change in cropmark clarity. It is not clear whether a bank was present, either between the ditches or to the outside.
Two of the four ring ditches are quite large. The eastern example in particular. In fact it appears to be slightly larger than the 'henge'. This may suggest that if it is a round barrow, it is an early example.
All of the features seem to form a linear barrow cemetery associated with NHER 17697. The focus of the cemetery appears to be the possible henge.
The possible Iron Age pot found on this site is likely to be an earlier prehistoric fabric in light of the aerial photograph evidence.

18 July 1996. NLA aerial photography.
Very fine circular ring ditch visible, with causeway to the northeast. Almost cetainly a ploughed out barrow or mini henge.
An irregular anomaly to the east is possibly geological.
To the southwest is an additional circular feature, possibly a ring ditch, but less regular/circular than the first. Potentially also prehistoric.
M. Brennand (NLA), 3 December 2001.
