Map

15 July 1996. NLA air photography.
Grid reference amended from TG 2836 3162.
Cropmark of ring ditch located at approximately TG 2833 3158. This may be a Bronze Age barrow site. Although it is near to a windmill site (NHER 6858), the location is different so the ring ditch is probably unlikley to be that of a post mill.
A curvilinear feature is also visible to the north of the ring ditch.
S. Massey (NLA), 18 October 2001.

19 July 1996. NLA air photography.
Area centred TG 2836 3145.
Cropmarks visible to north of North Walsham.
To the south of the area is a potential oval enclosure with a square enclosure attached to its north side.
The geology in this area is complex (in the cropmarks) but these features appear genuine.
To the north is a ring ditch that may actually be the site of windmill NHER 6858 (which is marked 100m to northeast).
The remaining linears are probably field boundaries.
M. Brennand (NLA), 22 August 2001.

10 September 2007.
Google Earth shows curvilinear cropmark (?)
See (S1) for further details.
D. Lefeuvre (NLA), 20 September 2010.

June 2017. Aerial Imagery Interpretation.
Assessment of aerial imagery along proposed route of onshore cable for Norfolk Vanguard and Boreas Offshore Wind Farms.
This study mapped a small ring-ditch at TG 2836 3155, which is presumably the previously identified feature noted above. A number of linear cropmarks were also recorded (Site 270), although the majority correspond with former field boundaries depicted on the North Walsham tithe map (S2).
Information from draft report. Final version awaited.
P. Watkins (HES), 15 October 2024.

October 2017-March 2018. Geophysical Survey.
Magnetometer survey of site on proposed route of onshore cable for Norfolk Vanguard and Boreas Offshore Wind Farms.
This survey identified no evidence for surviving sub-surface remains associated with the ring-ditch at TG 2836 3155. The only linear cropmarks associated with corresponding anomalies were those that relate to late post-medieval field boundaries.
Information from draft report. See NHER 65841 for further details.
P. Watkins (HES), 15 October 2024.

October 2020-June 2021. Trial Trenching.
Evaluation of site on proposed route of onshore cable for Norfolk Vanguard and Boreas Offshore Wind Farms.
One of the excavated trenches was positioned to coincide with the relatively small ring-ditch at TG 2836 3156. This revealed several ditches, one of which coincided with the western side of the ring-ditch. No finds were recovered from this ditch and it should be noted that its orientation didn't match that of the selection of the ring-ditch with which it coincided. It is possible that the cropmark was mapped a little to the south of its true position, in which case a north-east to south-west aligned ditch in this trench and a north-west to south-east aligned feature in a trench immediately to the north could also potentially correspond with the ring-ditch. Unfortunately both of these ditches were also undated.
There was no evidence for surviving sub-surface remains associated with a north-north-west to south-south-east aligned cropmark at TG 2840 3150 and a north-north-east to south-south-west aligned cropmark at TG 2835 3161 (both mapped as part of the 2017 study).
Information from draft report. See NHER 65841 for further details.
