Summary

A complex group of undated cropmarks is visible on aerial photographs. The features include several enclosures, linear features, a possible ring ditch and possible trackways. Some appear to fit into the pattern of post medieval boundaries shown on historic maps. Others are similar in orientation to a possible Iron Age/Roman field system (NHER 38961) in the same area.

Map

THE CROPMARKS DESCRIBED BELOW WERE PREVIOUSLY RECORDED AS NHER 31747.

28 June 1996. NLA aerial photography.
Site consisting of an irregular enclosure, displaying both rectilinear and curvilinear elements.
The east side is relatively straight and runs parallel to a linear feature, forming a wide trackway with a slightly funnelled end.
Several additional linears run up to this ditch on its east side, forming a possibly trackway feature.
Within the enclosure are two features which may or may not be contemporary. One is a rectilinear enclosure and the second is a large circular feature, which may be an enclosure, or a ring ditch.
S. Massey (NLA), 8 October 2001.

December 2004. Norfolk NMP.
NMP mapping has led to the alteration of the central grid reference of the site from TG 2750 3643 to TG 2755 3643. Some of the cropmarks described above are now recorded as NHER 38961.
The cropmarks described above are visible on aerial photographs ((S1) to (S3)), centred at TG 2755 3643. The complex layout of the cropmarks, their rather fragmentary nature, and the fact that some are only faintly visible, makes this a difficult site to interpret. The principal element of the site seems to be a fairly large, irregular curvilinear enclosure (the irregular enclosure described above). The north side of this is overlain by a field boundary shown on historic maps (for example, S4), but a linear ditch which may form its east side appears to be aligned with another field boundary (no longer extant) shown on the same maps (the wide trackway described above). The dating of the enclosure is therefore extremely uncertain. Within it, part of what may be a rectilinear enclosure and a smaller, fragmentary circular enclosure (possibly a ring ditch) are visible. External linear ditches may define trackways and/or further enclosures or fields.
The cropmarks are visible over an area measuring approximately 135m by 112m. The larger, curvilinear enclosure measures approximately 80m long and 45m wide. The inner, circular enclosure measures at least 40m in diameter.
S. Tremlett (NMP), 6 December 2004.
