Full Description
28 June 1996. NLA aerial photography.
Cropmark of small ring ditch with central pit/grave visible.
S. Massey (NLA), 9 October 2001.
March 2004, Norfolk NMP
NMP mapping has led to the alteration of the central grid reference of the site from TG 2296 3558
to TG 2295 3559.
The ring ditch described above is visible as a cropmark on oblique aerial photographs (S1), centred at TG 2295 3559. Its morphology and location, in close proximity to a number of Neolithic and Bronze Age ceremonial and funerary monuments, suggests that it is the remains of a Bronze Age round barrow. The fact that its location corresponds with a modern agricultural cropmark, however, perhaps caused by animals trampling the ground around a trough (S2), suggests that its archaeological nature is far from certain.
The ring ditch is generally circular in plan but rather flattened on its north-east side. It measures 6.5m in diameter, significantly smaller than other ring ditches of probable Bronze Age date in the surrounding area (e.g. NHER 36481 and NHER 36480). If the ring ditch is archaeological in nature, and of Bronze Age date, the central pit within it may be a grave.
