Summary

An undated ring ditch, possibly the site of a post medieval windmill, is visible as a cropmark and low earthwork on aerial photographs and visualised lidar data. Part of what may have been an internal mound and a central pit are also visible. A pit and two ditches immediately to the east of the ring ditch may be contemporary features. The site may also be associated with what appears to have been a causeway leading to it from the west (NHER 66767). As the lidar survey was flown relatively recently (2017) it is likely that the earthwork elements still survive.

Map

19 July 1996. NLA air photography (S1-S3).
Single ring ditch visible on low (5m OD) knoll, with central feature showing as a dark round anomaly.
Possibly a small prehistoric barrow.
Less likely to be the site of a wind pump, but the possibility exists.

The undated ring ditch described above is visible as a cropmark and low earthwork on aerial photographs and visualised lidar data (S1-S2, S4-S7).
It is suggested above that the ring ditch might be the site of a small round barrow, or less probably, a wind pump. The location and context of the site – for example, the additional features such as the ditches, pit and causeway visible in the surrounding area – suggest that it is perhaps more likely to be a windmill or drainage mill site than a barrow, but in the absence of other evidence there can be little certainty about any interpretation.
S. Tremlett (Norfolk Historic Environment Service), 23 May 2023.
