Full Description
This record is for the below linear features. The double ring ditch (NHER 65632) and the sub circular enclosure (NHER 65633) have now been recorded separately.
19 July 1996. NLA air photography.
Cropmarks visible in the environs of Coldham Hall.
To the immediate northwest of the hall is an irregular, sub circular enclosure that is potentially prehistoric in date. A single linear feature apparently truncating the enclosure is likely to be a field boundary, as are the other linear cropmarks visible.
To the northwest the eastern half of a double ring ditch is visible, also likely to be prehistoric in date.
M. Brennand (NLA), 21 August 2001.
June 2022. Aylsham and Brampton Aerial Investigation and Mapping (AIM) Project.
The cropmarks of linear ditch features (see above) of a possible medieval to post medieval date are seen on aerial photographs (S1-S4). The fragmented linear ditches may have related to a series of field boundaries and boundary ditches of a possible medieval to post medieval date. It is also possible that some elements of the site could be earlier, possibly Iron Age to Roman, in date. A number of the field boundaries appear to cross the cropmarks of possible Bronze Age barrows (NHER 65630, 65631, 65632) and a possible later prehistoric enclosure (NHER 65633) also recorded in the area. The monument polygon has been amended to the extent of the features as seen on S1-S4.
J. Powell (Norfolk Historic Environment Service), 15 June 2022.
