Full Description
This record is for the rectilinear enclosure. The linear ditch features possibly relating to field boundaries originally recorded as part of this record have now been recorded separately as NHER 67052.
15 July 1996. NLA air photography (AP1).
Square enclosure and associated pits, and possible sunken feature buildings visible.
S. Massey (NLA), 18 October 2001.
19 July 1996. NLA air photography (AP2).
Sub rectangular (almost sqare) enclosure visible to the southwest of the old rectory. Positive anomalies within the confines of the enclosure may be the remains of a structure. A single, relatively thin ditch appears to be an internal division. The remaining linear features are likely to be field boundaries.
M. Brennand (NLA), 21 August 2001.
10 September 2006. Google Earth.
Rectilinear features can be seen clearly be seen on Google Earth imagery.
See (S3) for further details.
D. Lefeuvre (HES), 9th May 2011.
March 2023. Aylsham and Brampton Aerial Investigation and Mapping (AIM) Project.
The cropmarks of a rectilinear enclosure (see above) of an unknown date are seen on aerial photographs (S4-S5). The feature consists of a rectilinear (almost square) enclosure with internal features. A linear ditch (centred at approximately TG 2141 2930) aligned approximately north- south can be running through the centre of the enclosure which may relate to an internal division. A second east-west aligned linear ditch can be seen crossing the enclosure from the west. This feature most likely relates to a medieval to post medieval field boundary (NHER 67052) which may overlay the enclosure. A number of pit features are visible within the enclosure. The approximately square pit feature (centred at approximately TG 2140 2930) in the centre of the enclosure has been previously suggested (see above) to relate to a former building. It is also possible that some of the pit features could be geological rather than archaeological in origin. The date of the features is uncertain. An Iron Age to Roman date is possible. However, it is also possible that the features may be later in date, possibly relating to medieval to post medieval settlement. The monument polygon has been updated to the extent of the rectilinear enclosure as seen on S4-S5
J. Powell (Norfolk Historic Environment Service), 30 March 2023.
