Full Description
This record is for the medieval to post medieval field boundaries discussed below. The trackway is recorded as part of NHER 65640, The substantial ditch is now recorded as part of NHER 65641 and the ring ditches are recorded as part of NHER 65629.
15 July 1996. NLA aerial photography.
Cropmarks reveal a substantial ditch, flanked by a narrower ditch.
This boundary runs between two areas of woodland and it is possible that it may be a former woodland boundary.
A trackway can be seen to cross this boundary, this appears to follow the parish boundary. It is not clear whether this is later due to the nature of these cropmarks, although it seems to cut the boundary.
The site is traversed by many linears which appear to be field boundaries, some of which may be post medieval.
There are also two small co-joined ring ditches. They are located at NGR TG 2158 2715, sitting on the 25m contour which forms a small peak. These may be Bronze Age barrows, although they are quite small.
S. Massey (NLA) 12 October 2001.
June 2022. Aylsham and Brampton Aerial Investigation and Mapping (AIM) Project.
A series of linear ditch features (see above), most likely relating to field boundaries of a probable Medieval to post medieval date, are seen as cropmarks on aerial photographs (S1-S2). The features most likely form part of a Medieval to post medieval field system. A large possible post medieval boundary ditch (NHER 65641) can be seen crossing the boundaries in the centre of the area. Some of the boundaries in the east of the area can be seen crossing a trackway of an uncertain date (NHER 65638). As a result of a lack of hard control points when rectifying the aerial photograph, the locational accuracy of the mapping may have been slightly affected. The monument polygon has been amended to the extent of the linear ditch features as seen on S1-S2
