Full Description
22 July 1996. NLA air photography.
There appears to be a series of pits arranged in two short staggered lines in a north to south alignment.
The origin of these pits is unknown and they are fairly indistinct due to geological 'noise'.
This area used to be wooded and it is possible that these pits were produced by tree clearance.
H. Clare (NLA), 10 January 2002.
September 2007. ALSF NHER Enhancement Sub-Unit D.
These cropmarks do not seem to be related to the finds made in the same area recorded as NHER 40438.
M. Dennis (NLA), 19 September 2007.
March 2008. Norfolk NMP.
The cropmarks of a possible pit alignment of uncertain archaeological origin are visible on aerial photographs to the east of Downham Road, Watlington (S1).
The geological cropmarks in this area can have the appearance of rows of pits and it is therefore uncertain whether these features are archaeological or geological in origin. The possible pits are relatively irregular in shape and vary in size from 1.5m to 4m across. It seems most likely that these cropmarks are derived from natural features, however finds in the general vicinity indicate Roman and medieval activity at or near the area of the site (NHER 29718, 31435, 40438).
S. Massey (NMP), 05 March 2008.
