Map

28 June1996. NLA air photography.
Cropmarks situated to north of Knapton Church, consisting of two parallel linears, possibly a trackway.
Also in the southwest corner of the field is a right-angled stretch of linear ditch, which appears to be part of a rectilinear enclosure.
Two additional linears can be seen, also several pit-like features are present, although they may be geological in origin.

December 2004. Norfolk NMP.
Cropmarks of rectilinear enclosures, ditches, field boundaries and pits of undated and medieval to post medieval date are visible on aerial photographs (S1-3). These cropmarks are located at TG 3070 3426. A rectangular enclosure or field defined is centred on TG 3065 3412. The north and east sides are defined by a 2.5m wide ditch with a rounded corner in the northeast. It is likely the south and west sides of the enclosure are represented by the modern field boundaries. This gives the enclosure external measurements of 63m by 38m and internal dimensions of 60m by 35m. Inside this enclosure are a number of west to east and north to south aligned ditches, which may represent internal divisions. Two parallel ditches extend for up to 136m on a west to east alignment between TG 3063 3425 and TG 3077 3427. Although it is possible that these define a trackway, it is perhaps more likely that they represent a double ditched field boundary. Attached to the southern side of these ditches is a second rectilinear enclosure, measuring 28m by 16m externally with a 1m wide ditch. The southern ditch extends beyond the eastern end of the enclosure curving slightly towards the south. Further to the east at TG 3073 3424 another ditch appears to be aligned parallel to the double ditched boundary to the north. It is possible that this ditch represents the southern side of a third enclosure. It is likely that these enclosures and ditches are of medieval to post medieval date. Other undated ditches, on different northwest to southeast and southwest to northeast alignments, are also present within this group of cropmarks. Six large pits are also visible as cropmarks. Two of these, with sub-circular plans and diameters of about 2m, are present within the main enclosure at TG 3066 3421. A third pit is located at TG 3073 3422, with a fourth lying 15m to its east. These two pits have sub-rectangular to sub-square plans and measure up to 4m across. The fifth pit is located at TG 3066 3425 and has a sub-rectangular plan with dimensions of 4.5m by 2.5m. The sixth pit, lies 45m to the northeast at TG 3070 3427. It has a sub-oval plan and measures up to 5m by 2.5m. The date and function of these pits is uncertain. However, their proximity to the core of Knapton village may suggest that they are of medieval to post medieval date.
