Summary

In 2000 or 2001 a 'pit' containing wooden posts was identified on Holme Beach. However, further investigation has revealed that the posts belong to Early Saxon fishtraps (NHER 38042 and 39586) and that the 'pit' is probably a modern natural erosion scour. The feature is located within a sensitive and fragile National Nature Reserve, Site of Special Scientific Interest and Natura 2000 site. Holme Beach should be visited with great care not to disturb nesting or wintering birds.

Location

Map sheet TF74NW
Civil Parish HOLME NEXT THE SEA, WEST NORFOLK, NORFOLK

2000 to 2001.
Pit found. Wooden stakes or posts at one end. The file notes suggest that a brown flint flake recovered from in or around this feature was potentially a rolled Palaeolithic flake.
K. Hinds (NLA), 17 January 2001. Amended by P. Watkins (HES), 22 December 2013.

2003. NAU survey.
Pit related to V-shaped fish trap (NHER 38042).
See (S1).
J. Allen (NLA), 17 February 2003.

September 2003. Site visit.
Feature has eroded considerably since July. May not be a pit but a scour around a concentration of rocks.
D. Robertson (NAU), 22 October 2003.

November 2003. Site visit.
Mark Brennand recorded posts (NHER 38042) to the northeast of location of the feature in 1999 but did not mention it. This may imply that it was not visible in 1999 and, as a result, is more likely to be a scour than a 'pit' as previously recorded. The posts recorded as being inside the 'pit' are more likely associated with fishtraps NHER 38042 and 39586 than the feature.
D. Robertson (NAU), 8 December 2003.
