Summary

Earthworks pits were identified in this wood during an earthwork survey in 2001. These are likely to have been associated with post-medieval gravel quarrying as they lie adjacent to a large pit that was being worked during the mid-late 19th century. The remains of this former quarry are still visible and were examined during Rapid Earthwork Identification Surveys undertaken in 1998, 2001 and 2006.

The quarrying earthworks extend to the west and east beyond the area originally recorded in (S3), the mapped area of the site has been extended. A comparison of (S4) and (S5) shows the development of the quarry. By the late 1830s it was concentrated on an area to the east of a track; by the 1880s it had spread westwards. Part of the quarry is still used by the parish of Hockwold-cum-Wilton, according to [1].
