Summary

This early 18th century galleted carstone rubble building has brick dressings and a slate roof. There are three gabled projections to the rear and a 19th century extension to the west. The south façade has two storeys and attics with seven bays of 19th century windows with projecting heads. The door to No. 82 is inscribed 'W L 68', perhaps indicating a date of 1868 for the building. 'WL' may refer to the stonemason William Lawrie.

Map

82, 82a and 84 Bridge Street. (S1) records originally one building.
Early 18th century, of galleted carstone rubble with brick dressings and 'some carved stone to original block'. (Does this mean reused medieval stonework or is it referring to 19th century alterations? There is a reference to stone pinnacles and grotesque heads on the gables). Slate roofs. Three gabled projections to rear. Two with stacks. 19th century west extension. South façade two storeys and attics, seven bays of 19th century windows with projecting heads. Good shop front. Door to No. 82 inscribed 'W L 68' (1868?) in Gothic Revival style. Central of three rear projections contains early 18th century staircase.
(S2) in file.
E. Rose (NLA), 16 August 2002.

No 84 has a corner doorway with a head above that may be intended for Queen Victoria.
The reference to carved stone is indeed to MED stonework; there are several sections in the wall of no 84 facing Paradise Road which continues as 64 and 64A Paradise Road, including above a first floor window a section of Norman moulding. Old Fire Station Court continues the line to 62 Paradise Road which contains much more of the limestone and has a yard to the north formed of piers encased in reused limestone with iron railings between – this appears to be 20th century work reusing the limestone yet again.
64 and 64A will count as Listed Buildings by curtilage, but Old Fire Station Court and 62 Paradise Road not Listed.
E. Rose (NLA), 20 August 2007.

No 82 has inscription 'WL 68'. (S3) suggests WL stands for William Lawrie - a succesful stonemason in 1860s and 1870s (see S3)
