Full Description
January 2001. NMP.
Two groups of short sections of ditch are visible around TF 756 451, on 1945 aerial photographs (S1) and around TF 755 450 on 1971 aerial photographs (S2). The first group is similar, with zig-zag-shaped ditches. The group is not visible on the 1971 APs, as this area is now underwater, due to coastal erosion. A larger group of ditches at TF 755 450 is visible on 1971 APs in the inter-tidal area - this area was coastal saltmarsh in 1945. The function and date of these ditches is unclear, but it appears unlikely that they are of great antiquity. It is possible that these may have been World War Two practice trenches, but there is little firm evidence. Equally the earthworks could be caused by more recent activity.
Additional structure visible at TF 7568 4516 is likely to be a groyne (M. Brennand 3 September 2002).
A. Hunt (NMP), 26 January 2001.
