NHER 26708 (Monument record) - World War Two slit trenches and barbed wire obstructions

Visible on an aerial photograph of 1944 (S1) are a number of slit trenches and some barbed wire obstructions between TF 690 431 and TF 694 436. An L-shaped line of barbed wire adjoins a barbed wire enclosure at TF 6901 4318, and there is another such square enclosure to the southeast (TF 6910 4312). The enclosures may have been surrounding a World War Two military feature, thus creating a pair of strongholds. Also in the area a number of slit trenches can be seen. Most are in the shape of single chevrons, while there are two slightly longer stretches at TF 6906 4322 and TF 6903 4363. Whether or not some of these are actual trenches are unclear as they are located within a golf course, and could be confused with small bunkers/obstacles. The area was still in use in 1971, and the aerial photograph of that date (S2), shows no traces of the enclosures or trenches - presumably due to the intensive use of the land and frequent changes made to golf courses.
