Summary

Several banks, pits and a large hollow are visible as earthworks on aerial photographs. Although the date and origin of the earthworks is unknown it is possible that they date to the post medieval or modern period, and may have been associated with salt production.

Map

January 2001, NMP.
A large open-ended hollow is visible at TF 737 438 as an earthwork on 1945 APs (S1). It is just over 100m long and is in close proximity to a series of small pits (NHER 33706). There is a possibility that these features may be connected. Three small sections of bank are also visible as earthworks on the 1945 and 1972 (S2) APs. These could be spoil heaps from the small pits or the large hollow. They are located at TF 7384 4393 - TF 7384 4398, TF 7371 4397 - TF 7382 4398 and TF 7394 4399 - TF 7396 4393. Dating these features is difficult from the APs, but they are most likely to be post medieval or modern.
A. Hunt (NMP), 25 January 2001.

May-November 2004. Norfolk Rapid Coastal Zone Archaeological Survey.
Inter-tidal survey (Environmental Zone 7), Context 1032:
Situated on the southern edge of the saltmarsh.
Several banks, earthworks and areas of disturbed ground were observed.
It is possible that they may have been associated with saltworking, but this is a speculative possibility.
See assessment report (S3) for further details.
The associated archive has been deposited with the Norwich Castle Museum (NWHCM : 2017.421).
