Summary

A possible cropmark enclosure of unknown date is visible on aerial photographs on the valley side overlooking the River Burn within Burnham Thorpe. The enclosure is quite irregular in shape and it is possible that the cropmarks are, in part, geological in origin. If the enclosure is archaeological it is possible that it is some sort of stock enclosure, with a wide entrance to the south east.

Map

September 2002. Norfolk NMP.
A possible cropmark enclosure of unknown date is visible on aerial photographs on the valley side overlooking the River Burn within Burnham Thorpe (S1). The site is centred on TF 8473 4155. The site seems to have quite a wide entrance to the southeast. If the enclosure is archaeological it is possible that it is some sort of stock enclosure.

The enclosure is quite irregular in shape and it is possible that the cropmarks are, in part, geological in origin, or perhaps have been partially confused with geological features. The feature is located within an area of quite 'busy' geological cropmarks.

The site measure roughly 38m across and the ditches appear to vary between 1.5 and 3m wide. The shape of the enclosure is rregular, with some of the ditches being rectilinear and others curvilinear, with a corner to the northwest.
S. Massey (NMP), 26 September 2002.
