Map

October 2002. Norfolk NMP.
Group of negative cropmarks, mainly consisting of linears and a possible enclosure, visible on 1946 RAF aerial photographs (S1). Centred on TF 8344 4286 is cropmarks which seem to indicate a rectilinear enclosure, measuring 35m by 20m. There seems to be a linear alignment of fragmentary features and linears from TF 8339 4283 to TF 8348 4288. At the western end of this, centred on TF 8334 4280, is a slightly curvilinear L shaped linear. This runs from TF 8329 4275 to TF 8329 4282, then it turns 90º and continues until TF 8339 4282. It is possible that this represents part of a enclosure, 100m across and up to 85m long. To the west of the group is a linear running from TF 8312 4283 to TF 8321 4283. The date and archaeological origin of these features is unclear. It is possible that they are medieval in date, as the Late Saxon/Early Medieval Church (NHER 1770) and the later Burnham Friary (NHER 1738) may have provided a focus for medieval activity in the area.
S. Massey (NMP), 1 October 2002.
