Map

February 2001. Norfolk NMP.
A set of earthworks is visible around TF 827 442 on 1953 RAF aerial photographs (S1). The main features are two small, sub rectangular ditches, with banks around the outside. These are located at TF 8275 4428 and TF 8277 4428, and the 'enclosures' are about 10m across. One of the features is enclosed by another, larger, ditch which is formed by three or four linear ditches in the area. One of these ditches runs 150m north to south (in fragmentary form) from Tf 8280 4431 to TF 8278 4416. An L-shaped section of the ditch (which runs between the 'enclosures') has an associated bank.
The exact function of these features is not clear. The banks which can be seen would appear to be spoil from the ditches they are adjacent to. It is possible that the site may have beeen used for some kind of extraction, possibly salt, although it does not have any typical features. The ditched 'enclosures' could possibly be building or structure platforms, but there is not enough evidence to be sure. It is also difficult to be sure about the date of the features, they may be post medieval, but nothing appears in this location on the historic maps.
Hunt, A. (NMP), 09 February 2001.

October 2002. Norfolk NMP.
Additional earthworks have been identified on 1953 RAF aerial photographs (S1) and Hunting Survey photographs from 1969 (S2). A large L shaped bank running from TF 8274 4433 to TF 8283 4426, approximately 100m east to west and 50m north to south, measuring up to 9m in width. To the north of this was a second bank running from TF 5280 4420 to TF 8283 4437. Also two slightly raised mounds are visible centred on TF 8280 4420, measuring 21m by 7.5m, and another at TF 8286 4425, measuring approximately 15m across. These seem to be small to be salterns, it is possible that they are waste mounds of some sort. It is likely that these earthworks relate to some sort of late medieval to post medieval industrial activity. The circular pits, surrounded by banks have the appearance of some sort of kiln. It is interesting to note that on the 1822 plan of the Burnham Marshes (S3), a the building to the immediate northeast of this site is labelled as the 'Old Malthouse'. It is therefore possible that these are malt kilns, although this cannot be proved on the available evidence.
S. Massey (NMP), 4 October 2002.
