Map

June 2001. Norfolk NMP.
Linear feature seen as negative cropmark following the projected line of the Chapel Bank road and meeting up with the Cromer Road in Hunstanton. The cropmark is 6m wide and is visible on 1946 RAF aerial photographs (S1) and 1967 OS aerial photographs (S2). The linear appears to be either a now defunct stretch of road, or as the name ‘Chapel Bank’ implies, the line of a former bank. The negative linear appears to be flanked by a ditch on either side on 1946 RAF verticals (S1), although these features are not clear on later photos. This road can be seen depicted on the 1689 Hunstanton Field Book (S3) as cutting across strip fields. Although the road is not in use on Faden’s map of 1797 (S4). So the road is likely to late medieval to post medieval in date.
S. Massey (NMP), 29 June 2001.

April 2014. Geophysical Survey.
Magnetometer survey of land immediately east of Cromer Road.
There was no evidence for surviving sub-surface remains associated with these cropmarks.
See NHER 64669 for further detail.
P. Watkins (HES), 13 March 2021.

November 2015. Desk-based Assessment.
Assessment of proposed development site to east of Cromer Road.
The road is also shown on a map of 1615 (S6), labelled 'White Crosse'.
See report (S7) and NHER 64669 for further details.
P. Watkins (HES), 13 March 2021.

August 2017. Trial Trenching.
Evaluation of proposed development site to east of Cromer Road.
Although at least one trench was placed over the line of these cropmarks no associated remains were identified.
See report (S8) and NHER 64669 for further details.
P. Watkins (HES), 13 March 2021. Amended 9 December 2022.
