Full Description
July 2001. Norfolk NMP.
Cropmark of possible field boundaries, visible on 1946 RAF aerial photographs (S1) and 1967 OS verticals (S2). The Site consists of banks and ditches which appear to be part of a field system older than that on the 1902-7 2nd edition map (25 inch) (S3). The main boundary is a bank and ditch, running from TF 6797 4168 - TF 6827 4163. The ditch appears to be up to 7m wide and the bank up to 5m, although they may have been slightly widened by the plough. Parallel to this, 180m to the south, is a bank, 10m wide, which is still quite pronounced under the crop. The earthwork runs from TF 6809 4146 - TF 6827 4144, in between two existing field boundaries. A ditch, without an accompanying bank, is also visible running north to south, in between the two boundaries, from TF 6819 4163 - 6816 4146, and is approximately 6m wide. A similar feature runs parallel to this, approximately 180m to the west. Although this line appears to coincide with the marks of envelope pattern on the OS photos (S2). It is therefore a possibility that this is also the case for the eastern north to south linear, although this cannot be seen from the photo. Reference to the 1689 Hunstanton Field Book (S4) and a parish plan, pre-dating the 1857 Hunstanton Enclosure Map (S5), indicates that these boundaries correspond with some of those recorded as strip fields and amalgamated enclosures. It is therefore likely that the cropmarks show the more substantial boundaries within the late medieval and post medieval field pattern.

April 2014. Geophysical Survey.
Magnetometer survey of land immediately east of Cromer Road.
There was no evidence for surviving sub-surface remains associated with the east-to-west aligned cropmarks that cross the area examined.
See NHER 64669 for further detail.

November 2015. Desk-based Assessment.
Assessment of proposed development site to east of Cromer Road.
The northern group of east-to-west aligned cropmarks may well correspond with a boundary depicted on 17th-century maps of 1615 (S6) and 1689 (S4). This boundary divided two groups of north-to-south aligned strip fields. The area to the north was 'Over chappell gate' and the area to the south 'Hungry headland'. The appearance of potentially corresponding features on a map of 1615 obviously increases the likelihood that the origin of these boundaries lay in the medieval period.
See report (S7) and NHER 64669 for further details.
P. Watkins (HES), 13 March 2021.
August 2017. Trial Trenching.
Evaluation of proposed development site to east of Cromer Road.
Although at least one trench was placed over the line of the cropmarks that cross this site no associated remains were identified.
See report (S8) and NHER 64669 for further details.
P. Watkins (HES), 13 March 2021. Amended 9 December 2022.
