Map

July 2001. Norfolk NMP.
An earthwork linear bank can be seen to run from TF 6894 4004 to TF 6917 4014 on 1967 OS aerial photographs (S1) and 1988 BKS aerial photographs (S2), along the contour of the Ringstead Downs, almost parallel to the modern path that runs along the valley bottom. The bank is between 2 & 3m wide and runs for up 300m, although later features and footpaths have cut its length. It is possible that this slight bank relates to an earlier track that had been cut into the slope; the course of which may now be the existing path. This linear is cut by a track marked on the 2nd ed. map (1902-7, 25”) (S3) implying that it is at least that old. The bank leads to a now defunct quarry, also marked on the 1905 map. It is possible that this linear in some way relates to the removal and transportation of quarry/chalk material.
S. Massey (NMP), 5 July 2001.
