Map

February 2001. Norfolk NMP.
Two sections of bank are visible as earthworks on 1946 aerial photography (S1), between TF 8462 4499 and TF 8451 4450. They are quite linear and would appear to be man-made. Given the location of the banks and the number of other bank features in this area, it seems likely that these banks may be the remnants of some kind of sea/flood defence or land reclamation effort. The banks may well be post medieval in date, as they are not so well defined or crisp as features NHER 26670 or 27031, although this may also be caused by the failure of these defences and thus erosion of the banks. These features are most likely to be remnants of a sea defence system of modern or post medieval date.
These banks are marked on the 1822 map of the Burnham salt marshes (S2) so are at least this date, probably quite early, as they already seem to be in fragmentary form at this date.
A. Hunt (Suffolk CC NMP), 5 February 2001.

May-November 2004. Norfolk Rapid Coastal Zone Archaeological Survey.
Inter-tidal survey (Environmental Zone 8), Context 1090:
A sea defence bank which was orientated roughly north to south and survived at least 2m height (although it was viewed from a distance). Located within an area of saltmarsh to north of Burnham Overy Staithe (between TF 84624 44998 and TF 84506 44499).
