Full Description
2000.
Human lower jaw bone found in gravelly deposit on the seaward side of Cabbage Creek.
Brief assessment of human mandible:
This jaw bone has been slightly distorted, probably post deposition. It should be attributed to a modern human, rather than an earlier hominin, and may not be particularly ancient. It is likely to be from an older individual, as the resorption of multiple tooth sockets indicates the passing of some time following tooth loss. The individual may possibly have been female, as the mandible is small and gracile, not robust, and also lacks defined indicators of male gender such as a prominent chin or gonial flare, but this is not conclusive.
See photographs (S1).
A. Rogerson (NLA), 10 November 2002 and E. Whitcombe (HES), 21 December 2010. Amended by A. Beckham (HES), 6 June 2017.
Easter 2003. Stray Find.
Flint scatter identified by [1].
This was thought by the finder to represent a "Stone Age site" of "Neanderthal or possibly earlier date". This identification should be treated with caution.
See location map (S2) and letter from finder (S3) in file.
D. Gurney (NLA), 16 July 2003. Amended by P. Watkins (HES), 7 March 2016.
