Summary

Fieldwalking in 2003 identified a significant scatter of prehistoric worked flint. This assemblage includes a range of implement and is of predominately later prehistoric date, with some pieces displaying techiques suggest of Late Bronze Age flint working. Other finds recovered included potentially prehistoric burnt flints, post-medieval pottery sherds and roof tile fragments, post-medieval gun flints and undatable iron slag.

Map

September 2002. Desk-based Assessment.
Assessment of proposed mineral extraction area.
Remains of Roman date may extend across the assessment area, particularly given the proximity of a possible temple site immediately to the east (NHER 9743). For the medieval period there is little to suggest that Mangreen was anything but small and marginal, despite its perceived importance.
See (S1) for further details.

January 2003. Systematic Fieldwalking and Metal-detecting Survey.
Field survey of proposed mineral extraction area (Area 3).
An extensive scatter of prehistoric work flint was identified. This material is mostly of later prehistoric date, with some pieces displaying evidence of a hard hammer core reduction technique that is suggestive of Late Bronze Age flint working. The assemblage includes a range of implements, including end scrapers, notched scrapers, horseshoe scrapers, points, notched flakes and miscellaneous retouched flakes. The limited evidence for earlier activity includes two blade cores of Early Neolithic or earlier date and a heavily patinated chert pebble blade.
The pottery recovered was largely of post-medieval date. It is noted that a small number of potentially late medieval sherds were also found during this work, although it is unclear from the report exactly where these came from. A large number of post-medieval roof tile fragments were also recovered, the bulk of which were found in the south-west corner of the site and along the western edge of the field.
Other finds recovered included a small number of potentially prehistoric burnt flints, iron nails, fragments of iron slag and two gun flints.
See report (S3) for further details. The results of this work are also summarised in (S4).
The associated archive has been deposited with the Norwich Castle Museum (NWHCM : 2007.306).
