Summary

Archaeological trenching here in 2002 uncovered various features and deposits. The earliest datable feature was identified as either a ditch of massive proportions, a gravel quarry or a hollow way. A piece of pottery recovered from the uppermost fill of the feature suggests a possible late medieval or early post-medieval date. A compacted modern mortar deposit was also identified in two of the trenches. It was probably part of a hard standing associated with the residential development of Bowthorpe since the 1970s. Other modern features were also identified along with an undated gully and post hole.

Map

November-December 2002. Trial Trenching.
Evaluation on site of proposed residential development. Contexts 1-49.
Six trenches excavated, four of which revealed archaeological features and deposits.
The earliest datable archaeological feature was a wide, deep feature with an undulating base. It may have been a single ditch with massive proportions, a gravel quarry or a hollow way that formed on the line of a track or road. The hollow way interpretation is supported by the presence of possible cart ruts. A piece of pottery recovered from the uppermost fill of the feature suggests a possible late medieval or early post-medieval date.
A compacted modern mortar deposit was identified in two trenches. It was probably part of a hard standing associated with the residential development of Bowthorpe since the 1970s. Other modern features were identified in two trenches. Three undated features - a pit, a possible post-hole and a gully - were excavated in the northern part of the site.
