Summary

In May 1999 timbers were discovered amongst the peat beds on Holme Beach during a walkover survey. It was thought that they might represent a trackway, although it is equally possible that they were naturally deposited within a palaeochannel or creek. Radiocarbon dating has shown that the timbers date to the Middle Bronze Age. The site is located within a sensitive and fragile National Nature Reserve, Site of Special Scientific Interest and Natura 2000 site. Holme Beach should be visited with great care not to disturb nesting or wintering birds.

May 1999. NAU survey.
Revealed a southwest to northeast orientated possible trackway or old water course clogged with redeposited timber (formerly NHER 33771 context 79, containing timbers contexts 80 to 82). Approximately 20m survives. Dendrochronology and radiocarbon C14 samples taken.
J. Allen (NLA), 17 February 2003.

2000. Radocarbon dating.
Three wood samples, all alder, were submitted for radiocarbon dating. They produced calibrated dates of 1750-1320 cal BC, 1870-1520 cal BC and 1690-1410 cal BC. These suggest the timbers date to the Middle Bronze Age.
Initally interpreted as a crudely lain trackway. However, it contains no upright timbers, none of the recorded pieces showed any evidence of being worked and there was no indication that the timbers were ever raised above ground level. The arrangement of pieces is not uniform and it is possible that they were randomly deposited within a palaeochannel or creek.
Information from (S1).
D. Robertson (NLA), 25 May 2006.

2003. NAU survey.
Visible for one day, but then concealed by sand. Unable to make assessment of condition, or record further.
J. Allen (NLA), 17 February 2003.

September 2003. Site visit.
Site located using GPS.
Area of site covered in thick layer of seaweed, mussels and sand = poor visibility.
Some of the timbers recorded in 1998 may have been identified, but because of poor visibility not able to tell for certain
A rectangular hollow was noticed - was a testpit dug here in 1999?
D. Robertson (NAU), 20 October 2003.
