Full Description
March 2003. Watching Brief.
Monitoring of two foundation trenches to rear of building.
Revealed natural chalk bedrock, overlain by an undated sandy soil. A sloping brick structure of post-medieval date, probably associated with the construction of the present property, and a 19th century cellar wall were also recorded. The modern garden soil which sealed these features was cut by a 20th century drain and a set of steps that incorporated a re-used gravestone. The gravestone may have originated from the 14th-century Dominican friary; Blackfriars Hall (NHER 194 and other entries) is situated close by to the north-west.
See report (S1) for further details. The results of this work are also summarised in (S2).
The associated archive has been deposited with the Norwich Castle Museum (NWHCM : 2009.215).
M. Horlock (NLA), 7 August 2003. Amended by P. Watkins (HES), 19 May 2015 and 5 May 2019.
