Summary

This great house probable dates to around the time of the Dissolution or shortly afterwards. It contains large quantities of reused limestone almost certainly from St Benet's Abbey (NHER 5199) who owned the manor. It was raised in height and altered in about 1900, and extended in around 1940. A building survey in 2003 ahead of structural changes seemed to confirm the presence of medieval stonework from the Abbey.

August 2003-January 2004. Building Survey.
Proposed building work at The Old Hall, Woodbastwick, East Norfolk, prompted a record of specific features of the existing building before alteration/demolition or exposure during changes to the structure. Little evidence for original 16th or 17th century fabric was found, although one of the walls, when demolished contained architectural fragments, probably derived from a major ecclesiastical building, possibly St Benets Abbey (NHER 5199), not far away.
See report (S6) for further details. The results of this work are also summarised in (S7).
The associated archive has been deposited with the Norwich Castle Museum (NWHCM : 2008.82).
