Full Description
Great house, probable Dissolution mansion, or of a date soon afterwards. Contains large quantities of reused limestone almost certainly from St Benet's Abbey (NHER 5199) who owned the manor. Raised in height and altered in about 1900, extended in around 1940.
See (S1) for futher details. See also plans, elevations and photographs in (S2).
E. Rose (NLA) 17 March 2003.
Photographs (S3-S5) in file.
August 2003-January 2004. Building Survey.
Proposed building work at The Old Hall, Woodbastwick, East Norfolk, prompted a record of specific features of the existing building before alteration/demolition or exposure during changes to the structure. Little evidence for original 16th or 17th century fabric was found, although one of the walls, when demolished contained architectural fragments, probably derived from a major ecclesiastical building, possibly St Benets Abbey (NHER 5199), not far away.
See report (S6) for further details. The results of this work are also summarised in (S7).
The associated archive has been deposited with the Norwich Castle Museum (NWHCM : 2008.82).
J. Allen (NLA) 2 September 2005. Amended by P. Watkins (HES), 5 May 2019.
