The White House, 10 Mendham Lane, Harleston.
Unlisted house, identified by the Norfolk Historic Buildings Group as a 17th-century core with ceiling beams extended in 18th century and regency period, altered 19th century with Gothic revival fireplace.

During World War One, the house was used as a Red Cross hospital (S2). Records indicate that it opened 29th October 1914 and closed 19th February 1916. It accommodated 14 beds, and during its operation 123 patients were treated there. Whilst occupied by the Red Cross, medical staff and patients signed a three-foot square linen table cloth which was cared for by a staff member and passed down through friends and is now in the care of the Harleston and District Branch of the Royal British Legion. The table cloth was transferred to a new location, Calcrofts (NHER 12476), in May 1917 and continued to be added to until April 1918. This has helped local researchers to gather a great deal of information on individuals with a connection to the two hospitals, and their report is available on-line (S2).
