Full Description
Before 30 April 2003. Metal detecting.
Medieval Ae buckle. Oval frame (23 x 27mm), heavy bar-shaped outside edge with knop at both ends; integral plate (23 x 19mm) with pin hole and three rivet holes. Plate tapers from attachment edge to width of 17mm before swelling out into a knop on both sides next to junction with frame. The whole is gently curved lengthways. Probably for use as a spur buckle, but differing from normal spur buckle (cf. Dress Acees. Fig. 48, nos 320-1) in its lack of a hook at the attachement edge, being more massive and having, in proportion, a much shorter plate. 13th-early 14th century.
A. Rogerson (NLA) 30 April 2003.
