Map

February/March 2003. Metal detecting.
Late Saxon openwork stirrup strap mount of Williams' Class B. Two iron filled fixing holes in corners near straight top, two more in angled flange behind which remains of iron fitting. Animal mask in the centre is flanked by beasts whose backs are depicted in the moulded edges. There are six round apetures. This example appears close to a much better preserved mount from a medieval context in Andover, Hants (Williams 1997 no. 467), but little of the surface detail has survived. 11th century.
Digital image in file, see (S1).
A. Rogerson (NLA), 12 April 2003.
