NHER 39367 (Monument record) - Medieval finds and features at 63-65 Duke Street

An evaluation carried out in 2003 prior to redevelopment revealed a pit containing 11th to 12th century pottery fragments. Animal bones recovered from the pit indicated hide and fur preparation and horn working in the area. Several layers above the pit was evidence of 13th to 14th century timber buildings, succeeded by a second phase of 16th to 17th century buildings. It seems these last, although probably much altered, remained until the site was destroyed by bombing in 1942.
