Full Description
December 2002. Norfolk NMP.
The feature appears to be straight sided (S1) with overall dimensions of 75m X 75m. The sides of the enclosure are aligned in an approximate north-west to south-east direction and the ditch has a potential width of 5m. There is no apparent break within the enclosing ditch and there are no visible features within the interior.
The enclosure ditches may in fact be drainage ditches, although they do not appear to be attached to a wider system of drains. The sides appear to be too straight and uniform to be natural saltmarsh channels. The enclosure is situated to the north of the 'Sea Bank' in an area that would have been tidal saltmarsh until the post-medieval period. There is no lightened soil within the interior of the enclosure and this is unlikely to be a re-used saltern mound, unlike NHER 22998 to the immediate south. This is presumably a post medieval enclosure, relating to agricultural practice (saltmarsh grazing regimes). It is possible, although less likely, that this is a defended, military enclosure from the 16th or 17th centuries.
M. Brennand (NMP), 13 December 2003.
