Map

December 2002. Norfolk NMP.
To the east of the site is a 120m length of north to south aligned linear feature (S1), comprised of a bank with a ditch on the eastern side (TF 5563 2108 to TF 5563 2120). There also appears to be a fragment of bank on the eastern side of the ditch. The northern half of this feature appears to be forming the eastern side of a rectangular enclosure, although the northern side of the potential feature is not visible. The enclosure has an east to west length of 90m and a possible north to south length of 60m. The southern and western sides of the enclosure are formed by single ditches, and there is possible, narrow rectilinear annexe on the western side of the enclosure. To the west of the enclosure is a lighter area, recorded as a low mound during the Fenland Survey (NHER 23560) and containing a concentration of finds. This may represent a simple occupation site but is probably a saltern mound, made redundant by the construction of the Sea Bank. There is a possible single curvilinear feature (TF 5547 2103 to TF 5570 2106) to the south, although the feature is poorly defined.
The definition of these cropmarks is poor, and partially obscured by relict saltmarsh channels, although the enclosure does appear to be an anthropogenic construction. The enclosure is situated to the immediate south of the Sea Bank, which might even have formed the northern side of the enclosure. Equally the Sea Bank may have cut through these features. A scatter of Late Saxon to medieval pottery has been found within the western area of the site and it is suggested that the enclosure post-dates the sea bank and is Late Saxon or medieval.
M. Brennand (NMP), 16 December 2002.
