Map

January 2003. Norfolk NMP.
The feature is visible as a line of irregular to curvilinear field boundaries (S1) running for a length of 680m from a known point on the Sea Bank (NHER 2187) at TF 5741 2096 eastwards to TF 5809 2091. The feature appears to be a low, narrow earthwork, which may indicate the former course of a bank, but may equally simply have been formed by the hedge that represents the field boundary. There is reason to suspect that the Sea Bank originally took a route along this line. The course of the Sea Bank, as recorded under NHER 2187, turns sharply towards the northeast at TF 5740 2096 (the western end of this feature), although this is likely to be a later addition to the bank, to enclose and reclaim more saltmarsh during the medieval period. It seems possible that the Sea Bank originally ran in an approximate east to west alignment, closer to the village of Clenchwarton than its current route, and that this represents part of that bank.
M. Brennand (NMP), 20 January 2003.
