Map

September 2002. Norfolk NMP.
The larger mound is represented by an amorphous to rounded cropmark with an east to west length of 85m and a width of 70m. To the immediate east is a cropmark of a smaller rounded mound with an east to west length of 30m and a width of 16m.
This one of a small group of probable saltern mounds within this area, with a larger group situated to the southwest in North Wootton. The mounds are situated to the immediate north of the former outlet of the Babingly River, in a location that would have been close to the high tide line up until the 19th century. The mounds are situated on the seaward side of the sea defence bank NHER 36934, and may be relatively late within the sequence of salterns in this area. It is presumed that most of these salterns are medieval in date but this particular location was still seaward of the land reclamation banks until the 19th century. Equally, an earlier date for some of the mounds cannot be discounted. There are Roman period saltern mounds to the north in Snettisham.
M. Brennand (NMP), 25 September 2002.
