Map

March 2003. Norfolk NMP.
The mounds are visible as five distinct features (S1), although originally they may have only been two or three mounds. The eastern feature (TF 6419 2553) is sub-rounded, with a maximum diameter 25m. The westernmost feature (TF 6410 2555) is amorphous and irregular in plan, with the course of a former saltmarsh channel running along its western side. The mound has a north to south length of 73m. There are three smaller sub-rounded mounds to the immediate east, which may have once been part of the larger mound, or at last derived from the same sand washing source. These mounds, along with salterns NHER 27767 and 27769, are on the eastern, landward side of the large saltern complex at North Wootton, suggesting they are some of the earliest mounds. A Late Saxon or an early medieval date seems likely for the formation of these mounds.
M. Brennand (NMP), 6 March 2003.
