Full Description
March 2003. Norfolk NMP.
There are multiple cropmarks visible within this area in 1958 (S1), most of which are drains or related to drainage, and visible as earthworks in 1944 (S2). The potential enclosure is not visible as an earthwork in 1944 (S2) and is on a different alignment to the other features, suggesting it may be unrelated to the drains and potentially earlier in date. The enclosure is approximately rectangular in plan, aligned on a north-west to south-east alignment, with a length of 52m and width of 24m (S1). The north-western end of the enclosure has right-angled corners, while there is one rounded corner at the south-eastern end and a break in the ditch on the south-eastern end side. This gap may be an original part of the enclosure or due to differential preservation of the feature.
The ridge and furrow style earthworks cover approximately half of this field, and may have originally been more extensive. They are aligned in east to west and north to south directions, divided by larger drains. These earthworks are probably post-medieval, and related to drainage or use as lazybed type features rather than the classic medieval form of agriculture. The earthworks almost certainly post-date the enclosure, and are now ploughed flat.
M. Brennand (NMP), 11 March 2003.
