Map

October 2002. Norfolk NMP.
The bank has a meandering, irregular course, running in an approximate east to west direction across the reclaimed saltmarsh to the west of the Great Ouse River (S1). The feature is discernible for a length of approximately 850m. The bank has a width of 12m. The bank runs from the Sea Bank NHER 2187 in the west (TF 6025 2083) and at the eastern end (TF 6093 2112) the bank appears to be truncated by the bank of the Lynn Channel (13532), dating from 1821.
This particular stretch of bank is not depicted on late eighteenth century (S2) or nineteenth century (S3) maps and is unlikely to be twentieth century in date, suggesting it has gone out of use by the eighteenth century. The feature is likely to date from the late medieval or Early Post-medieval periods, and probably represents part of a wider system of progressive sea bank construction and land reclamation.
M. Brennand (NMP), 4 October 2002.

June 2013. Trial Trenching.
Single evaluation trench excavated where the proposed route of new sludge transfer pipeline crosses the sea bank.
At this location the top of the sea bank lay at 2.17m OD, with hand augering suggesting that the total depth of bank material was approximately 0.9m. Most of the deposits exposed were thought to be been part of the bank, suggesting a maximum width of up to 9m. A single medieval pottery sherd of probable 12th- or 13th-century date was recovered from a possible flood silt that appeared to lie beneath the bank material.
See report (S4) and NHER 61897 for further details.
P. Watkins (HES), 31 October 2016.
