Map

October 2002. Norfolk NMP.
The cropmarks probably represent a four sided, approximately square or rectangular enclosure, although the potential western side of the site is not visible (S1). The enclosure is orientated approximately north-west to south-east and has a minimum overall length of 72m and a minimum overall width of 51m. The enclosure appears to be formed by a bank, with a small break in the eastern corner although it is not possible to say whether this break originally acted as an entrance. There is a possible narrow ditch on the outside of the northern and eastern sides, and on the inside of the southern side. There is a single linear feature running from the eastern corner of the enclosure for a length of 75m towards the south-east.
The date and purpose of this site are unknown. The western side of the enclosure appears to be truncated by the eastern bank of the Lynn Channel (NHER 13532), constructed in 1821, suggesting that it pre-dates the bank construction. The location was probably saltmarsh and mudflat until the start of the nineteenth century and the location would not have been suitable for permanent settlement prior to that time. The site is not typical of the medieval saltern mounds within the surrounding area and a Pre nineteenth century Post-medieval date is suggested.
M. Brennand (NMP), 8 October 2002.
