Map

October 2002. Norfolk NMP.
There are nine individual features visible (S1) although they probably originally formed five large mounds centred on TF 6290 2363, TF 6298 2372, TF 6306 2369, TF 6302 2364 and TF 6297 2362. The features are irregular to sub-rounded in plan and range in diameter from 25m to 85m. The northwestern feature within the group is made of four features that are likely to have a formed a single horseshoe shaped mound. The southernmost mound was large enough to be recorded with a 5m contour by the Ordnance Survey (S2) in the twentieth century.
These features form part of a dense concentration of saltern mounds located along the saltmarsh in North and South Wootton. Direct dating evidence is scarce but isolated finds of pottery would suggest that the majority of the mounds are medieval in date.
M. Brennand (NMP) 22 October 2002.
