NHER 27110 (Monument record) - Possible medieval salterns

The group consists of four mounds (S1) centred on TF 6300 2298, TF 6306 2298, TF 6317 2301 and TF 6307 2293 although the southernmost mound is actually linear running from TF 6297 2291 to TF 6319 2293. The northern three mounds are sub-rounded in plan, ranging in diameter from 35m to 60m. They appear to be located within the meanders on the southern side of a saltmarsh channel still extant in the nineteenth century (S2). The southern feature is curvilinear in plan, with an east to west length of 215m and a width of 30m. This mound also appears to follow the northern bank of a saltmarsh channel that was still visible in the nineteenth century (S2), although straightened to some degree. It is possible that this mound formed some form of embankment or flood defence along the side of the channel, although it is suggested that the material was produced during the salt production process rather than from dredging the channel.
These features form part of a dense concentration of saltern mounds located along the saltmarsh in North and South Wootton. Direct dating evidence is scarce but isolated finds of pottery would suggest that the majority of the mounds are medieval in date.
