Civil Parish SOUTH WOOTTON, WEST NORFOLK, NORFOLK

Map

October 2002. Norfolk NMP.
The mound appears to be sub-rounded to irregular in plan (S1), with a north to south length of 115m and a width of 60m.
This is almost certainly a saltern mound, and forms a small group along with sites NHER 13784, 27130 and 27131. This in turn is part of an extensive saltern complex on the former saltmarsh at South Wootton. Dating evidence for the salterns is scarce although isolated finds from sites further to the north would suggest that the majority of these mounds are medieval in date.
M. Brennand (NMP), 25 October 2002.

September 2016. Geophysical Survey.
Magnetometer survey of part of large proposed development site.
Although this saltern mound fell entirely within the area examined this survey identified no evidence for associated remains.
See report (S2) and NHER 66864 for further details.
P. Watkins (HES), 18 April 2023.

May 2017. Earthwork Survey.
This survey found no evidence for a surviving mound at this location.
See report (S3) and NHER 66864.
P. Watkins (HES), 18 April 2023.

February-May 2018. Trial Trenching.
Evaluation of part of large proposed development site.
Three of the trenches excavated coincided with the mapped location of this possible saltern mound. No potentially associated features or deposits were recorded.
See report (S4) and NHER 66864 for further details.
P. Watkins (HES), 18 April 2023.
