Full Description
March 1989. Site visit (possibly this location or westernmost mound of NHER 27901).
[1]'s saltings mound is a natural feature of pure silt.
See (S1).
J. Wymer (NAU), 8 March 1989.
June 2003. Norfolk NMP.
The southernmost mound is relatively small and sub-rounded (S2), with a north to south dimension of 43m. There are the faintest traces of a raised area between this mound and the saltern site NHER 27928 to the immediate south, although this feature has not been mapped. The northern mound is elongated with rounded corners, with an east to west length of 98m. The northern edge is straight and appears to have been truncated by a channel or ditch, suggesting that the mapped feature is only the southern element of a bigger mound. These features are likely to be medieval in date, and are probably the result of sand washing, the filtering of salt from tidal sand and silts as part of the salt production process.
This may be the site inspected by John Wymer on 8 March 1989 (S1). It is described as a natural feature of pure silt. However the waste from sand washing may be pure silt or sand, not necessarily containing burnt material or cultural artefacts.
M. Brennand (NMP), 24 June 2003.
March 2008. Desk-based Assesment.
Assessment of proposed development site.
Further details concerning salterns and the salt industry in this area has been carried out as part of a desk-based assessment. This area was visited as part of this assessment. Portions of a shallow ditch were observed in the area of the northern mound.
See report (S3) and NHER 51575 for further details.
H. Hamilton (NLA), 14 May 2008.
June 2008. Watching Brief and Trial Trenching.
Monitoring of groundworks for development recorded a sandy layer extending over the northwestern portion of the site, in the vicinity of the northern salt mound. A ditch interpreted as evidence of canalisation of a meandering stream (NHER 51575) appeared to respect the edge of this layer and the northern salt mound.
See report (S4) and NHER 51575 for further details.
H. Hamilton (HES), 02 January 2013.
