Summary

Aerial photographs of this location that were taken in 1961 showed the cropmarks of a possible structure or building along with several other unidentified features. It was speculated that the building represented may have been rectangular, multi-celled and built from timber, although no date could be assigned to it. The other features may relate to archaeological deposits or may be natural features.

Map

June 2003. Norfolk NMP.
Within the south-western corner of the field is an apparent sub-rectangular feature, probably formed by a series of regular narrow ditches (S1). These features appear as lighter cropmarks and initially give the impression of being caused by walls or banks. However, it seems most likely that these are positive cropmarks in reverse, and are actually caused by negative features such as ditches or beam slots. The rectangular feature is apparently divided into a minimum of four, and possibly five approximately square cells. The feature has a total length of 17m, and a width of 3.3m. The cells have an average internal area of 2.7m X 2.8m. The feature is aligned with its long axis in an east to west direction, and kinks slightly toward the south at its western end (S1). There are some short stretches of linear feature and at least two pits to the immediate west of the rectangular feature. These cropmarks initially appeared to be a stone-walled building, although the features are probably caused by ditches, and the cropmarks are reversed. It cannot be discounted that the marks were caused by modern agricultural practice such as a tractor, although it is thought that is not the case. The cropmarks possibly represent a rectangular, multi-celled timber building, although there is no indication of what date that building may be.
There are additional cropmarks around TF 6442 2334 which appear to be ditches and other archaeological features (S1). These have not been mapped as they are indistinct and there is no control on the available image. The areas of the possible rectangular structure and the other cropmarks have subsequently been built over, and are now beneath a housing estate.
