Full Description
June 2003. Norfolk NMP.
A relatively short length of curvilinear bank appearing as a fine and upstanding earthwork, sandwiched between a ditched field boundary and the Great Ouse Lynn Channel (S1). The feature is aligned in an approximate south-west to north-east direction and has a length of 87m, but has almost certainly been truncated at each end. The bank has presumably been truncated at the north-eastern end by the cutting of the Lynn Channel and the re-routing of the Great Ouse, undertaken in 1821. There is curiously no sign of a continuation of the bank to the south-west and its route cannot be determined.
This feature is presumably a sea defence bank, and may be part of the Later medieval and Post-medieval saltmarsh protection and reclamation. The bank is almost certainly earlier than 1821. The feature is possibly associated with bank NHER 27943 (now on the other side of the river) and possibly even with bank NHER 27938, to the immediate south, although from this one small fragment it doesn’t appear to line up with either.
M. Brennand (NMP), 27 June 2003.
