Full Description
June 2003. Norfolk NMP.
Within the centre of the site are the possible remains of a banked enclosure (TF 6052 2098) with a north to south length of 30m and a width of 24m (S1). The feature is comprised of a U-shaped arrangement of banks, with the northern end apparently open. To the immediate west is a sub-square mound with a maximum dimension of 13m. This may be a pillow mound type feature or a building platform. To the east of the possible enclosure are the traces of a possible second enclosure or structures, represented by a right-angled length of bank and three short straight lengths of bank. These may the traces of buildings, but could simply be the remains if small enclosures or allotments. To the south are the fragmentary remains of two mounds or banks.
To the east is an approximately south-west to north-east aligned length of bank. Running at right angle towards the south-east, from the northern end of this bank is a slightly meandering linear feature (S1). This feature is indistinct and may be a natural watercourse from the former saltmarsh, but may also be a ditch and, combined with the bank, may form part of an enclosure or field. This feature is not on the same alignment as the smaller enclosures or structure, and the two may not be contemporary.
There is no dating evidence for any of these features. They are located on the site of the former saltmarsh and are possibly medieval or Post-medieval. There is no trace of any recorded features in this area on available maps and a medieval date is possible, contemporary with the saltern mounds within this area.
M. Brennand (NMP), 27 June 2003.
