NHER 38265 (Monument record) - Probable medieval saltern mounds

The so-called enclosure is formed by a sub-rectangular arrangement of ditches, with its long axis aligned north to south, and which also continue as single ditches to the north and east (S1). There is no visible southern side to this alleged enclosure, although this may have been in the area now occupied by a trackway (S1). This may not be an enclosure as such, but a canalised channel cut round the site of the saltern mounds. There appears to be a bank on the inside of the western ditch. Within the ditched area are two probable saltern mounds (centres TF 6314 2169 and TF 6315 2166), although they may have originally been all one feature. The mounds are sub-rounded in plan, with maximum diameters of 30m. The southern mound may be truncated on its southern edge by a trackway. There is a fragment of raised area to the south of the trackway, which may be a truncated fragment of the southernmost saltern mound.
These saltern mounds are likely to be medieval in date, and are probably the result of sand washing, the filtering of salt from tidal sand and silts as part of the salt production process. The enclosure ditch or channel may also be medieval, designed to provide water for the salt processing. Equally the ditch may be Post medieval, operating as drainage on the saltmarsh under reclamation.
