Full Description
June 2003. Norfolk NMP.
The bank is visible running in an approximate east to west direction, for a length of 860m (S1), between banks NHER 5528 and NHER 5529, which defined the edges of the former course of the River Great Ouse, prior to 1821. There is a slight kink in the course of the bank, towards the eastern end, as thought the course was diverted around a feature such as a saltern mound, although a mound is not discernible at this point. The feature was presumably designed to prevent tidal waters flooding the area around North Lynn, after the river had been diverted into the new channel, to the west. It is possible that this feature pre-dates bank NHER 27078 to the north, although the two may be contemporary.
M. Brennand (NMP), 30 June 2003.
